Last night was opening night for An Enemy of the People--an adaptation by Arthur Miller of an original Ibsen work. The RJR Theatre Department produced and performed this play. This morning, 22 classes saw an abbreviated version of the play during first period. We hope many of you will come to tonight's performance at 7 PM and tomorrow's performance at 2 PM. Tickets are only $5.
(Look at this set! The technical theatre students and their teacher, Teri Beadle, created it in the first 5 weeks of school!)

How can an individual alert society to an unwelcome truth?
* What turns a people’s friend to a people’s enemy?
* Who decides which is which?
* What is the role of a free press in society?
* How important is money in politics?
The play is the story of Dr. Stockman, a doctor who has returned to his home town. The setting is Norway, sometime in the 1890’s. Dr. Stockman saw an opportunity that could bring a great deal of wealth to the town, and designed a health spa where people who were ill could come and relax and recuperate. When the play opens, a Corporation has taken his idea and developed KIRSTEN SPRINGS, and everyone expects great things when the Springs open. Doctor Stockman has had his suspicions about the water that runs through the Springs and has had the water tested. The report from the University confirms that the water is polluted by the waste water from the Tannery. Doctor expects that the Corporation will rebuild the water system in Kirsten Springs.
The mayor of the town, who is Dr. Stockman’s brother, is also on the board of the Corporation, and he announces that the cost of rebuilding the water system will be paid for by a new heavy tax on the people of the town. This sets up the major conflict for our play.
* Do you see any parallels to current situations?
* How much do you know about the state of the water in Flint, MI?
