“In a World of Walls, Music Builds Bridges” is what George Hamilton, IV said at his concerts. He first performed on the RJ Reynolds Auditorium stage and wrote as his senior quote "Grand Ole Opry, Here I Come!" He was known as the international ambassador of Americana Music and his family is helping the RJR PTSA put on a fundraiser in his honor this weekend. During the first hour, Bob Mayer, Judy Voss Jones, and Mitch Easter will be inducted into the RJR Arts Hall of Fame.
At Reynolds we are all about building bridges and making connections—between curricular areas, between diverse groups of people, between the past and the future. We want ALL students to graduate high school as responsible, productive, and creative citizens. We believe the arts can help them do so!
The George Hamilton IV Folksy Music Festival (aka "FolksyFest") will be held at 301 North Hawthorne Road Saturday, September 22nd from 5-10 PM.
We have a wonderful lineup of musicians including the bo-stevens band, Mitch Easter and his band, the Jones Sisters, Dori Freeman Band from Galax, VA, Laura Ingram Semilian, and Chris Jones and the Night Drivers from Nashville. George V who performed with his dad at the Grand Ole Opry and who is an accomplished musician himself will be the emcee.
The RJR students are involved, too. Many are volunteering. The Dancing Boots and Marching Band will perform while honoring Bob Mayer, beloved band director and founder of the Boots in the 1960’s. The ACappella group has arranged “folksy” music and will perform. Judy Voss Jones, Bob Mayer, and Mitch Easter will be inducted to the RJR Arts Hall of Fame. The orchestra will perform with Laura Semilian and several dance students are accompanying the Chris Jones Band as cloggers!
The school does not get additional state or district funds to support our arts programs. We hope this event will help to fund necessary supplies, equipment, professional development, and field trips so that we can continue to provide excellent instruction every day for every student in every class using the arts!
Even if you cannot attend, please share with your contacts and see if they might be able to.
Tickets are available online at www.folksyfest.com or at the door. Senior citizens and students are $10, other adults $20, and children 12 and under are free. Tickets bought online will be available at the Will Call window.
Please share away!
(people who can’t attend but who want to give a donation can do so by buying tickets and not using them OR sending a check to the school with Arts Magnet Program on the memo line)
