The days leading up to Thanksgiving at Reynolds are precious ones. The air starts to turn colder, leaves fall on our beautiful campus, winter sports begin, and LOTS of planning goes into the Thanksgiving Assembly and the Reynolds-sance Fair.
This blog post is designed to inform the RJR community of the special day AND to give images of the map, schedule, program, and activities in a digital format to streamline organization for our students and staff.
First things first--students will NOT have first period that day. Last week, during our School-Wide Arts Event, The Miracle Worker, students attended with their first period classes and there was NO second period that day (November 10). There will be no first period on November 22.
Students will attend the Thanksgiving Assembly with their 2nd period class. Students who are typically at the Career Center at 10 AM may choose to attend the Thanksgiving Assembly at RJR--they need to be sure to sign in at the table on the Auditorium Porch in order to be excused from their CC classes.
Jazz Band and A Cappella (including a special appearance by the Summit Chorus) will provide the music. Student Government will provide the slideshow of pictures from the year so far. The Key Club President will announce the winning club and class that collected the most cans for the Canned Food Drive--and will present the highly coveted handmade trophies! The Yearbook Editors will announce the teacher that the students have selected as the recipient of the 2017 Yearbook Dedication. The Senior Chair of the Creative Leadership Team will introduce our Keynote Speaker. The winners of the RJR Spoken Word contest will present their pieces.
Each year, much thought goes into selecting a speaker who will inspire students and staff, who will encourage the community to think about topics they may not have considered (at least through that particular lens), and who will make connections between RJR and other organizations doing great work. We try to find someone who can help us consider our yearly theme in an engaging way. This year's theme is Access. This year's Speaker is Dr. Melissa Harris Perry!

Dr. Harris Perry is the Maya Angelou Presidential Chair at Wake Forest University. There she is the Executive Director of the Pro Humanitate Institute and Founding Director of the Anna Julia Cooper Center. She is the Editor-In-Chief at ELLE.com and hosted the television show, "Melissa Harris-Perry" from 2012-2016 on MSNBC.
She is the author of the award winning Barbershops, Bibles, and BET: Everyday Tallk and Black Political Thought, and Sister Citizen: Shame, Stereotypes, and Black Women in America.
Harris-Perry received her BA degree in English from Wake Forest University and her Ph.D. degree in political science from Duke University. She studied theology at Union Theological Seminary in Hew York and has been a faculty member of the University of Chicago, Princeton University, and Tulane University.
Students will continue their day with shortened 3rd and 4th periods. During their last class, they will receive a map and a ticket out the door asking them to record what they are learning and doing during the festival. At 2:25, all 4th period classes will dismiss to the outdoor spaces around RJR where clubs and classes have prepared interactive booths for Reynolds-sance.
Oktoberfest has been a tradition at RJR since 1986. Last year, the Fall Festival that is run by clubs combined with the 2015-2016 focus on Innovation, and Reynolds-sance was born. This year, in conjunction with the yearlong theme of Access, the cross-curricular, experiential learning event of Reynolds-sance Festival will continue. There will be jousting with swim noodles, Pie-a-Boot, Rent-a-Mime, food prepared by our Foods and Nutrition classes, performances on the outdoor stage, things to buy, games to play, art to make, etc. etc. Students will return to 4th period at 3:25 to turn in their Exit Tickets, pick up their backpacks, express their own Thanksgiving wishes to one another, and depart at the regular dismissal time. The Creative Leadership Team, Inter-Club-Council, and Admin Team have spent a lot of time planning the Reynolds-sance Fair. We hope that it succeeds in its purposes:

- Increase knowledge of and participation in RJR Extracurricular Opportunities
- Increase Student Achievement by participating in authentic learning about the Renaisssance
- Positively impact school climate and culture by celebrating success and having a shared experience
- Offer an opportunity for clubs to fundraise so they can support their yearly activities
